Naming things—children, stories, songs, poems—is hard. Shakespeare knew the flower’s name wouldn’t change its scent. But without a doubt, a name can poke our curiosity, set up our expectations and trigger our emotions.
Recently, I’ve been working with bandmates to come up with names for two new groups—every band’s least favourite process. After a meander through the creative labyrinth, with seven different people putting forward several names each, in both cases it all came down to elimination by preferential voting.
Can’t help it, I love me a band name that’s also a pun! Bass player, songwriter and band mate Dave Bueno is a member of The Private Tears. Band mate and amazing vocalist Kelly Collins sang three-part jazz harmony in Alley Scatz.
No surprise, then, that the names I put forward included The Woe Mantics and The Chromatones.
What names did we ultimately arrive at? You’ll find the answer on the Events page...
